New Delhi: The Indian National Congress today condemned in the strongest possible terms the heinous death threat issued to the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Shri Rahul Gandhi, by a ruling party spokesperson, branding the incident as part of a "larger, sinister conspiracy."
The threat was made on live television by Pintu Mahadev, a spokesperson for the BJP’s Kerala unit and a former state president of the RSS student wing, the ABVP. The statement, where Mahadev declared that “Rahul Gandhi will be shot in the chest,” has sent shockwaves through the political landscape.
A Cold and Calculated Death Threat
In a direct and unreserved statement, the Congress party asserted that this was not an "off-the-cuff remark or hyperbole," but a "cold and calculated death threat" against a leader who stands on the front lines in the fight for justice and constitutional values.
"This is a direct assault on the rule of law, on the Constitution that guarantees safety and security to every citizen, and to democracy itself," the party stated. This latest incident, added to a series of previous threats, raises serious questions about the BJP’s intent and the toxic environment being deliberately cultivated against Opposition figures.
Is This a Complicity in Violence?
The Congress fired salvos directly at the top leadership of the BJP, questioning their silence and asking:
Does the BJP endorse the politics of criminal intimidation, violence, and even death threats?
Is the BJP trying to normalise violence against the Leader of the Opposition, a constitutional position?
Congress media and publicity chairman Pawan Khera highlighted the disturbing pattern, pointing out the connection between such threats and previous attempts to compromise Shri Gandhi's security. "A BJP spokesperson said on TV that ‘Rahul Gandhi will be shot in the chest’ and no action has been taken... This stinks of a conspiracy," Khera said, adding that the party is losing the ideological battle and resorting to the "weapons of violence."
The Nation Demands Accountability
The Congress party is united in its demand for immediate and decisive action. General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal wrote a letter to the Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah, stressing the gravity of the situation.
“This is not merely an attack on an individual but an assault on the democratic spirit he represents... Any failure by you to act swiftly, decisively, and publicly will be judged as complicity—a de facto licence for the legitimisation and normalisation of violence against the Leader of Opposition,” Venugopal wrote.
Rajya Sabha MP Imran Pratapgarhi and social media head Supriya Shrinate echoed the sentiment, drawing chilling parallels to past political assassinations and questioning if preparations are underway to physically harm the LoP.
No Threat Will Deter the Fight
Shri Rahul Gandhi's fearless fight against the RSS-BJP ideology has demonstrably "rattled them." However, the Congress remains resolute.
"No threat or violence will deter him from standing up for the people of India and defending the Constitution," the Congress affirmed. "The nation stands united against any intimidation or tyranny. The more you threaten us, the stronger our resolve becomes.”
The entire nation is now watching, demanding immediate, exemplary legal action against the perpetrator and a categorical condemnation and public apology from the BJP leadership. The time for silence is over. The safety of the Leader of the Opposition and the integrity of India's democracy are at stake.
